Emergence (2007)

Animated and Produced by John Beck
Music by John Beck

This project marks my first foray into animation, during which I taught myself the fundamentals of stop-motion filmmaking. The film blends traditional stop-motion techniques with digital motion graphics, incorporating a diverse range of media, including found objects, collage, live-action video, and digitally rendered imagery.

Beyond being my first animated work, this project also represents my debut in composing and performing an original soundtrack. Music has always played a crucial role in my films, and I typically collaborate with my colleague Joseph Martin for scoring. However, for this piece, I decided to take on the challenge myself.

**UPDATE:** How essential is music in film? To explore this question, Joseph Martin created his own version of the soundtrack for this animation. The result is striking—his composition completely alters the film’s tone and emotional resonance. Not in a negative way, but rather as a testament to the profound influence music has on storytelling. Below is the same video, now set to Joseph’s score, illustrating just how transformative a film’s soundtrack can be.
